Stuck in neutral

This week everyone is trying to get back into the school groove. I see it all over campus, students dragging their feet, my friends taking constant naps; it seems spring break has made students even more lethargic than before we got the long-awaited reprieve. So what can you do to get back into the swing of things? Well you can go the sugar-and-Red Bull route like so many have, or give in to the urge to nap. These options are generally short lived though, with an inevitable crash.

The answer is simple. No, literally, it’s about doing things more simply. The energy drink you pound to get through your afternoon class? Your granddad didn’t have them and somehow he got through life. Nutrition and dieting aren’t just for athletes and the two weeks before swimsuit season. It’s not a hard concept: you are what you eat. If you eat sugary, fast food then you’re going to feel like crap. I’ll make you a bet, give up pop and drink more water and you won’t crash in the afternoon. Eat whole, unprocessed foods and you won’t feel sluggish for an hour after lunch.

If you look at your friends I bet you have a few that are way into fitness. These people do everything that you do and, on top of it, work out for two hours a day. So why are they always so chipper? Conditioning. Their bodies know that they have to have huge reserves of energy simply to function. If you never ask anything from your body, then it won’t worry about keeping your metabolism in check, keeping your muscles in good shape, etc.

I live my life by three mottos.

No regrets.

Keep it classy.

If it tastes good, don’t eat it.

Okay, so the first ones don’t really apply to fitness, but eat a little better and go for the occasional jog, and you’ll find yourself full of energy and vitality. Until next time, keep it classy.
